For many, their first experience with hookbills was the Budgerigar, or commonly called "parakeet". These sociable little birds have delighted both children and adults with their playful antics and happy chatter as part of many households. As early as I can recall in my childhood, my first memories of hookbills were of budgies in our home, and presently the trio in this Kaleidoflight are enjoyed by my own family. In the artwork, these active budgerigars play among colorful flowers and trees native to Australia. The green bird is considered the normal variety, the common color of wild budgerigars. The blue bird, known as the blue variety, lacks yellow pigment in its feathers. The pale bird is called a cinnamon. In this variety the rich black melanin in the feathers is replaced with a tan color. Although very different in appearance, these birds share a kinship of togetherness which shines through in this setting. |
