Kaleidoflight - Series I: Hookbills ©
"Cockatiels"

One of the most expressive hookbills is the cockatiel.  Not only is the cockatiel considered sweet natured by many bird enthusiasts but it is one of the few small hookbills with a crest of feathers on top of its head which can be raised or lowered to display how the bird is feeling at any given moment.  Cockatiels are usually gentle and affectionate toward their mates and those who care for them.  This breeding pair of cockatiels greet me enthusiastically anytime I approach their aviary.  They call and fly to me seeking attention.

The resting cockatiel in the artwork is called the cinnamon pearl variety, due to the light colored, delicate lace pattern on its feathers.  The landing cockatiel is a lutino, which is found in shades of yellow and white.  Lutinos retain their orange ear patches, but lack all traces of dark feather coloration.  These birds are shown nesting in a hollow tree among their native Australian wildflowers.
